Weaning your baby

By Cecilia Koh

The information provided below is a general guide and is not meant to replace your doctor's advice. If you have any problems or questions, please refer to your doctor.

Do not give your baby solids before he has completed four months because the digestive system is not ready and you may create unnecessary problems. Once your baby has completed his fourth month you can start weaning him onto solids.

Hi Anne
As your baby is only 6 months plus and he has eczema, there is no need to rush with adding too much variety into his porridge. When he gets older, you can add cauliflower, broccoli, pumpkin, sweet potato leaves, daun kaduk and any food that can be digested easily.

I like to know :
1)how many times a day should I feed solid food to my baby of 8mths+.
2)my baby has two small teeth (bottom), is it safe to feed sliced bananas? will he know how to chew?
3) on overnight porridge, my babysitter currently freezes them & thaw/warm them up when required. She usually freezes for a week's supply. Is this OK?

Hello Ann Lim
1. At eight months old, it is best to give one main meal a day, which could be lunch or dinner. However, this is not a blanket rule for all. If your baby is very hungry all the time, it is ok to give him 2 meals per day.
2. Yes, it is safe to give him sliced bananas but make sure that the slices are small. At this age a baby does not really know how to chew, but you can teach him by letting him see you eat at the dinner table.
3. If the porridge is cooked and frozen immediately, it is not considered overnight porridge therefore it is safe to use. Do not keep leftover porridge in the fridge and then freeze it.

Hi Ceci,My baby is turning a year old by end of tis mth. Jus wanna check 1)do I still continue rice porridge til he's able to chew, as now he's still taking once rice cereal in the morning and once rice porridge in the afternoon, else is milk with 4hrs interval with total 5 meals time a day. 2) should i now gradually increase to 5hrs, as i see he can last little longer. 3) generally, what age should kids start adult foods?
Appreciate your feedback very much. cheers

Hi Ceci,
i got the 4th question, when should i start adding taste to my baby's food? he's turning a year old by end of this month.
thanks and cheers

Hi Anne
Now that your baby is almost 1 year old he should be having 3 solid meals a day
Breakfast - bread, cereals, cheese, fruits etc
Lunch - porridge
Dinner - porridge
In addition he should be taking about 4 - 5 bottles of milk per day. The amount actually varies in each baby depending on his appetite.
You can start introducing adult food to him anytime now. The best time to do this is when you are having your dinner by letting him sit at the table with you and giving him a little of whatever you eat provided it is not too salty. By doing this you are introducing him to the various taste of food.

Hi Ceci,
many thanks for your quick reply. but when can i stop porridge and change to Rice? do i hv to wait til he has all the teeth and ability to chew and swallow is fully developed? if yes roughly til how many yrs old ?
thanks n cheers

Hi Anne
Sorry it has taken me so many days to post a reply. There is no hard and fast rules about switching from porridge. It all depends on the baby. Some babies will refuse to eat porridge the moment they start eating rice and some will want to eat porridge for a longer time. Just keep introducing small pieces of adult food and when the time comes your baby will let you know which he prefers. However, the majority of children will stop eating porridge by the time they are 2 years old, provided you have introduced them to rice earlier.

Hi Cecilia,

My baby is 8months old. He's still eating pureed food. For the porridge, do I need to push thru the sieve? He's not teething yet.

Hi Cecilia,

Great article. Once the baby porridge (for lunch & dinner) is cooked in the slow cooker (ready for lunch time), do i have to turn it to low temperature to keep the food warm until dinner time? Alternatively, can I keep it in the fridge and heat up later (for consumption within the same day)?

Hi Winnie
I am sorry I could not reply to your post earlier. There was a problem with the comment box and I could not post.
There is no need to sieve the porridge. If it is mushed up properly, all he needs is to swallow it. In fact you do not need to puree the porrdige.

Hi Ju Lee
how is Ju Lia? Once Ju Lia has had the first meal ie lunch you just switch the power off. About one hour before her next meal, just turn back the power to heat up the porridge. There is no need to refrigerate the food.

Hi Cecilia,

Thanks for your response. Julia is great. She is very adorable but also getting naughtier each day. We have settled in well in Australia and enjoy going to the beach (we live near the beach). I will send you a copy of Julia's photo separately.

Hi Cecilia,
I just joined your website and I am very amazed with all the information here. My son is going to b 6 months old this week and I have just started him on solid food last week. What I wan to know is, can I give him brown rice cereals? I plan to make my own brown rice powder(from unpolished brown rice grain), but a friend of mine said that brown rice is not good for baby's digestive system.Millet and quinoa are better choices. Pls advise. TQ v much

Hi Szu Sze
You can give your baby brown rice but you need to give some extra water as it can be a little bit heaty for some babies. Millet is very safe to use and is ideal for babies with eczema. As with quinoa, there is a difference of opinion on its safety for young infants, therefore it may be best not to give this to your baby.
