Hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in babies and young children

This is a common illness affecting children below 10 years of age but is more prevalent amongst those who attend kindergarten. Infants and young children are more likely to be infected because they have fewer antibodies than adults. Infection results in immunity to the specific virus but a second episode may occur if it is a different member of the enterovirus group. Not everyone who is exposed or infected becomes ill.
