Hi,

My baby is 7 1/2 months old. It's been past few days since I noticed the skin color of my baby's nose (at the sides) is yellow. Hoped you have some info to share on what might be the cause?

Thanks.

Hi Yet Lee
One possible reason that I can think of for your baby's skin turning yellow at this age is that you may be giving too much carrots and papayas which contain high levels of vitamin A which cannot be excreted easily. I would suggest that you reduce these 2 food substances and see what happens. As long as the yellow colour does not spread all over the body and to the whites of the eyes, it is not really serious. If it does spread you must get medical attention asap.
Kind regards
Cecilia

Hi Cecilia,
I was breastfeeding my baby when my previous confinement. I just wonder is that because any food I taken will cause the baby jaundince become more serious? Food like Ginger,Sesame Oil or Soh Hup?

Hi Cecilia,

Thank you for having such a wonderful and informative site. My son (10 days old) has G6PD and jaundice. My boy is being mixed fed with breast milk amounting to 1 ounce during each feed. I have many concerns regarding jaundice and G6PD and how to tackle it. Currently I am in my confinement and I am taking sesame oil, rice wine, carrots, fish, vege, and pork. I have stopped taking ginger. On top of that I have also stopped bathing the baby in Guiness Stout as recommended by the confinement lady. Please tell me if I am doing anything wrong.

Hi Alex

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and you are doing the right thing for your baby.

Babies with G6PD deficiency are usually diagnosed because they have jaundice soon after birth. Once the jaundice is resolved, they should not have other problems from G6PD deficiency provided they avoid the list of food and drugs given to you by the paediatrician. If you are breast feeding you should avoid consuming these items as they can pass to your baby via your breast milk. Also you should avoid these Chinese herbal medicines such as Rhizoma Coptidis (黃蓮), Flos Chimonanthi Praecocis (臘梅花), Flos Lonicerae (金銀花), Calculus Bovis (牛黃) and Margarita (珍珠末).

In addition, G6PD deficient children and their caregivers should avoid close contact with mothballs (Naphthalene) and Naphthalene-containing products and if your baby is ill or admitted to hospital, do tell them about your baby’s condition so that the right medication will be prescribed.

hi,

my nephew he is 2months old this october 1 2008. when my sister brought him in the clinic for immunization. The doctor said the baby has a yellowish skin and eye. We are both afraid about our baby. Can you place advise me.

Hi anonymous
Since your baby nephew is 2 months old, there are several reasons for him to be jaundiced.
He had jaundice during the first 2 weeks and it is just taking a bit longer to clear up. This is not a problem. Just make sure he has sufficient milk intake
He is still breast fed and sometimes breast milk can cause a mild jaundice which is not serious.
He has a condition called G6PD which is not a problem provided you follow the doctor's instructions.
Please ask the doctor what is the possible cause of your nephew being jaundiced and I am sure he will be able to do any necessary tests if required and prescribe the correct treatment.

Hi Cecilia!

My triplets were born at 30 weeks. Currently, they are still in NICU. My concern is that I want to breastfeed my three babies, will ginger affect my breastmilk??? As my mother-in-law insisted that I need to take ginger regardless how I tell her. Please advise me how should i breastfeed my babies as they were born earlier?

Hi Sze Li
Wow, triplets!! Congratulations.
It is only during the first 10 days that ginger in breast milk will interfere with bilirubin metabolism. after that it does not have any effect so even though your triplets were born early, it is quite safe to eat ginger after 10 days, however try not to take too much.
